Vale Roger O'Sullivan

VALE Roger O'Sullivan

It is with great sadness that we share the news that Roger O'Sullivan, first Executive Officer of the CCSP, passed away on Tuesday 19 April surrounded by his family.

In 2007 the CCSP held the inagural Roger O'Sullivan lecture and then in 2014 introduced the Roger O'Sullivan Award  for school communities in honor of the extraordinary contribution Roger made to Catholic Education both in NSW and nationally throughout his career. In particular it recognised the work undertaken by Roger in building the solid foundations of the CCSP and giving an avenue for parent voice and advocacy, that continued long after his retirement due to his wonderful ability to empower others.

At the inaugural Roger O'Sullivan Award in 2007, Brian Croke (Executive Director of the NSW Catholic Education Commission) spoke to the calibre of man that Roger was:

One thing you have to say about Roger is that he’s never afraid to ask the hard questions.
And if you know Roger he doesn’t just ask innocently.
He keeps on asking, and asking,
and asking, until the answer is at hand.

When I (Brian Croke) joined the Catholic Education Commission, NSW as Executive Director
in 1994 it wasn’t too long before I was trying to entice
Roger to bring his experience to
bear on the Commission’s work. We then spent several productive years with Roger as our
colleague. In the course
of those years he also became the godfather of the newly formed
Council of Catholic School Parents, then its foundation Executive Officer.
So, from the very
start he taught the Council to be satisfied with nothing less than the highest professional
standards. He also taught them to never
flinch from the hardest questions.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Roger's family and thank this wonderful man for his passion for Catholic Education.

Roger’s was farewelled at a beautiful Requiem Mass at his parish St Kieran’s Catholic Church, Manly Vale by family and many colleagues from the Catholic Education Commission and the CCSP.
