Win for Parents Too: Improving Teacher Training

Win for Parents Too: Improving Teacher Training

The peak body representing Catholic school parents in NSW and the ACT today welcomed the Federal Government’s initiatives to boost national teacher training standards.

The Teacher Education Ministerial Advisory Group (TEMAG), set up by Education Minister, Christopher Pyne, today released its report and recommendations for boosting teacher education training and making sure teaching students are ‘classroom ready’ when they graduate.

The report found that that a culture of high expectations, best practices and continuous improvement is necessary to give Australian parents, students and the community confidence in those delivering school education.

Acting Executive Director of the NSW/ACT Council of Catholic School Parents (CCSP), Linda McNeil, said she was pleased that future teacher training standards would focus on partnerships in learning as well as academic success at university.

“The report found that good teaching involves the ability to form strong relationships with students, their families and other community members,” Ms McNeil said.

“One of its key recommendations is that to be ‘classroom ready’, teaching students must be able to effectively engage with parents about the progress of the children.”

Ms McNeil said statistics within the report highlight the lack of preparation of pre-service teachers in the areas of parent and community engagement.

“We are pleased that the report does not shy away from naming effective parent engagement as a serious contributor to boosting teaching standards,” she said.

“Ensuring teaching students develop these skills is critical if we wish to retain teachers beyond their first five years of teaching.”

“This will ensure that parent engagement is further embedded into teaching preparation and practice, which is a win-win for children, their families and educators.”
